Becoming a pet groomer..?

I live in greensboro nc and would love to become a pet groomer. I would love to attend school but due to funds I cannot at this time. Does anyone have any advice on "working my way up". Or ideas on where I should go. I would prefer not to work for petsmart or petco due to the contract time. So any other ideas or advice on certifications would be great.
