Can I shave my non shedding dog with regular hair clippers?

I have two nine week old puppies, they are a mix of poodle, maltese, yorkie, and pomeranian. They do not shed. I am trying to figure out if I am going to have to take them to the groomers regularly, or if I can use regular mens hair clippers. I don't want to hurt them! But I also don't want to have to pay regularly for the groomers. I am told by my cousin, (who has a dog of the same breed from a previous litter) that they will need clipped often because they do not shed. If you do not, they can become a long knotty mess. Hahaha Please help! Thank you!
